I'M A LIFE

A COLLABORATION BETWEEN

ALLIANCE FOR CHOICE

LA BATRADE &

ISOBEL ANDERSON

I’m A Life is an exciting new collaboration supporting Northern Ireland’s abortion rights campaign.

In November 2018, musician Isobel Anderson is teamed up with Alliance For Choice to make a music video for her song _4284_ (I’m A Life). The song uses words taken verbatim from Janet Ní Shuilleabháin's real account of travelling to England for an abortion. Janet revealed that when she first heard the song:

Isobel describes why she felt compelled to write about the abuse of reproductive rights in Northern Ireland since she had moved to Belfast in 2009, but found it difficult to know exactly how without misrepresenting people’s lived experience of the issue. Then:

The video has been filmed and directed by Wild Stag Studio’s Dave Neale, and features women who support Alliance For Choice amongst the backdrop of Belfast and Northern Ireland.

I’m A Life contributes to the ever growing demand for women’s reproductive rights in Northern Ireland and, as the song states, “an end to silence and shame”.

Alongside this video project, the pro-choice clothing brand La Batarde has designed a special jumper, which will be on sale via Alliance For Choice's website >>

I cried. The opening line had me catch my breath, and the next thing I knew I was crying. They were complex tears, of surprise, tinged with sadness & then of joy.

[...] more and more people started sharing their stories online, and when I read Janet’s incredibly moving account, the song came together.

LYRICS

_4284_ (I'M A LIFE) BY ISOBEL ANDERSON

I have only one regret,

And that’s that I had to travel far away,

And go through it all alone,

The hardest way.

But I am not alone in my choice,

And it’s a choice I don’t take lightly,

There are many others who have taken,

This journey like me.

This is my body,

You don’t decide what’s inside,

You can try, you can try and shame me,

But you forgot I’m a life.

I remember everything about it,

The floors of the waiting room,

And I remember everything they shouted,

Because I choose.

But when I see my children,

I know this journey saved my life,

And I respect that others would have,

A different path to take.

This is my body,

You don’t decide what’s inside,

You can try, you can try and shame me,

But you forgot I’m a life.

I’m a life,

I’m a life

(Repeats)

Oh well this is by no means a commandment,

But an end to silence and shame.
